Electrical work in old Rander
The old core of Rander presents electrical conditions that simply do not occur in Surat's newer neighbourhoods. Houses built long before electrification received their wiring as a retrofit, often surface-mounted, often extended and re-extended as each generation added rooms and appliances. Several decades of that produces installations of genuine complexity — and occasionally of genuine concern.
The most serious findings here are the oldest ones. Cloth-insulated and rubber-insulated cable still turns up in Rander properties, and both have no remaining safe service life: the insulation crumbles when disturbed and offers essentially no protection. Where we find it, replacement is not a recommendation to consider but the only responsible course. Wooden switch blocks and porcelain fuse carriers occasionally appear too, and while these have a certain historical charm, they belong in a museum rather than in a live circuit.
Surface-mounted wiring in old houses has usually been added to repeatedly, with each generation of work tapping the previous one. Junctions are made wherever was convenient, frequently twisted and taped, sometimes inside a wall cavity where they cannot be inspected. Tracing these installations is slow work, and rushing it is how mistakes happen. We budget time properly for Rander old-town jobs rather than pretending they are the same as a flat rewire.
Access is the other practical constraint. Narrow lanes mean material has to be carried, ladders are difficult, and there is often no space to work outside the property. We plan for that, and we plan for the fact that in a densely packed old town, work on one property frequently reveals something about a neighbouring one — a shared wall carrying somebody else's cable, an informal supply arrangement between adjoining houses.

Where concealment is appropriate, we work with the building rather than against it, using existing routes and voids where they exist and keeping new chasing to a minimum. Where it is not, we run rigid conduit neatly along architectural lines, which looks considerably better than most people expect and is fully accessible for future work — a genuine advantage in a building that will need attention again.
The technical specification is the same as anywhere: ISI-marked FR copper sized to a proper load calculation, dedicated circuits for high-load appliances, a distribution board with a main isolator, 30 mA RCCB and correctly rated MCBs, a printed legend, and full insulation, continuity, polarity and earth testing at handover with a written report. Old buildings deserve modern protection more than new ones do, not less.
Earthing needs particular attention in old Rander because many of these properties have never had a proper earth at all — the installation predates the requirement, and what earthing exists may be a spike driven into the ground decades ago that has long since corroded. We measure first, and where a new pit is needed we advise on the best available location, which in a densely built lane sometimes requires creativity.
Shops, workshops and community buildings
Rander has a strong tradition of small commerce and workshop trades, and these premises bring their own electrical requirements. Workshops running machinery need three-phase supply where the equipment demands it, dedicated protected circuits, proper isolation for maintenance, and mechanical protection for cable in an environment where things get knocked. A workshop wired like a shop is a workshop with damaged cable within two years.
Small shops need reliable display and signage lighting, refrigeration circuits where relevant, billing counter power that increasingly wants UPS backing, and frontage installations that survive monsoon. The recurring fault we correct in Rander shops is the same one we find in Bhatar: protection that has been progressively upsized to stop nuisance tripping, leaving cable protected by devices far above its rating. We add circuits rather than upsizing further, and we explain plainly why.
Community and religious buildings in Rander are a category we take particular care with. These are buildings with high occupancy at peak times, often with older installations, frequently with substantial decorative and event lighting added over the years, and generally without anyone whose specific responsibility the electrical system is. Work here is the standard modern mix: fit-out for new possessions, additional AC circuits, board upgrades with RCCB retrofit, kitchen and geyser circuits, lighting, fans, switchboards, inverters and repairs.
The transition zone between old and new Rander is where things get interesting, because you find buildings from every era in the same street. A 2010s apartment block next to a 1970s house next to something considerably older. Diagnosing well here means not assuming — a Rander address tells you very little about what you will find behind the distribution board cover.
Inverter work is heavy across all of Rander. The outage pattern makes backup near-standard, and the correction we make everywhere applies: an inverter wired to the whole property rather than to a dedicated backup line drains its battery in minutes when a geyser has been left on. A separate backup distribution way with visually distinguished sockets typically doubles or triples effective runtime.
CCTV is also in strong demand, both for homes and for the small commercial premises. Our standing advice applies: placement at identification choke points beats camera count, storage should be calculated from your required retention rather than guessed, and the recorder's factory password must be changed — internet-exposed recorders with default credentials are continuously scanned.
Coverage and response in Rander

Because Rander's building stock varies so widely, we ask a few more questions than usual when booking — the age of the property, whether the wiring is concealed or surface-mounted, and what the distribution board looks like. For old-town properties we would strongly recommend an electrical safety survey before any other work. Two hours, ₹2,500, covering earth resistance, insulation resistance on every circuit, RCCB presence, MCB ratings against cable, socket polarity and earth continuity, and a thermal check of the board. In a property of considerable age with layered wiring, it is the only sensible way to establish what you are actually dealing with — and it occasionally finds cloth-insulated cable that the owner had no idea was there.
