An MCB protects your cable. An RCCB protects your family. Most Surat homes have the first and not the second — and the ones that do often have a device that has never been tested since the day it was fitted.
It is worth being precise about what these devices actually do, because the distinction saves lives and is almost universally misunderstood. A miniature circuit breaker — an MCB — monitors current. When the current through a circuit exceeds the breaker's rating for long enough, or spikes instantly on a short circuit, it disconnects. Its job is to stop the cable in your wall from overheating and igniting. It is a cable-protection device, and it will happily allow a current far too small to trip it but far too large to survive.
A residual current circuit breaker — an RCCB — monitors balance. It compares the current flowing out on the live conductor with the current returning on the neutral. In a healthy circuit these match exactly. If 30 milliamps go missing, that current is escaping somewhere it should not be: through a wet wall, through a failed appliance casing, or through a person. The RCCB disconnects in under 40 milliseconds. That is fast enough to interrupt the fault before it can stop a heart.
The typical distribution board we are called to upgrade in Surat has four to six MCBs, no RCCB at all, and every socket in the property riding on protection that was designed for a completely different purpose. Sometimes there is an old ELCB — a voltage-operated device that has been superseded for good reason, because it fails to detect faults where there is no return path through the earth conductor. Occasionally we find a board where the RCCB has been deliberately bypassed because it kept tripping, which is the electrical equivalent of removing a smoke alarm because the toast keeps setting it off.
A correct board is not complicated. A main isolator so you can kill everything at once. A 30 mA RCCB covering all socket circuits — ideally split across two RCCBs so a fault in the kitchen does not black out the bedrooms. MCBs sized to each circuit's cable, not to the appliance and never to whatever stops the tripping. Lighting kept off the RCCB or on a separate one, so you are never left in the dark by a socket fault. And a legend card telling you what each device controls.

Every RCCB is verified with a calibrated loop tester — measured trip current and trip time recorded on your certificate, not just the press of the built-in test button.
