Locate the fault to the metre before opening a single wall.
A short circuit is a live conductor meeting neutral or earth with almost no resistance between them. Current spikes enormously, and everything depends on whether the protective device wins the race against the cable's insulation. Finding the fault precisely is what prevents the repair from becoming a demolition.
When a short circuit occurs, a properly rated MCB clears it in a few milliseconds and the only evidence is a tripped breaker. When protection is missing, oversized, or bypassed, the same fault dumps thousands of amps into a cable for long enough to melt insulation, vaporise copper and start a fire behind a wall you cannot see into. This is why we treat every short-circuit call as urgent even when the customer describes it calmly.
The instinct after a short circuit is to find the burnt wire, which usually means breaking walls until it appears. We do it differently. Insulation-resistance testing between conductors and to earth tells us which circuit is faulted and how severe the breakdown is. Continuity and loop-impedance measurements tell us roughly how far along the run the fault sits. Where the route is ambiguous, a cable tracer follows the conductor through plaster. By the time we open anything, we know where we are opening and why.
The causes are consistent across Surat. Moisture ingress is the leading one — monsoon water tracking down a conduit from an outdoor light, a terrace point or a leaking bathroom wall, bridging live and earth through damp plaster. Mechanical damage is second: a nail or screw driven into a concealed conduit while mounting a wardrobe, a curtain track or a television bracket, sometimes years before the fault appears. Then rodent damage in duct spaces and false ceilings. Then simple age — PVC insulation that has been thermally cycled for twenty-five years becomes brittle and cracks. And finally, failed appliances presenting as a wiring fault when the real short is inside a geyser element or a pump motor.
Repair follows the finding. A localised damaged section is cut out and replaced with a proper jointed run inside an accessible box — we do not bury joints in plaster and we do not tape a repair and plaster over it. Where the insulation-resistance reading shows a whole run has degraded rather than failed at one point, we say so plainly, because replacing that section is the honest answer even though it costs more than a patch.
Afterwards, we look at why protection did not do its job, if it did not. An oversized MCB, an absent RCCB or a bypassed device turns a contained fault into a fire, and there is no point restoring the circuit without correcting that. We include a protection review in every short-circuit call at no extra charge.
