There is a specific disappointment that comes with reviewing CCTV footage after an incident and discovering that the person is a hooded shape at the far edge of a wide-angle frame. The system worked. Every camera recorded. And the footage is useless, because nobody planned where a face would actually be captured at a usable pixel density.
Good CCTV design starts from identification points rather than coverage area. The gate, the main door, the lift lobby, the till, the stockroom entrance — the narrow places every person must pass through. A camera at head height covering one of those, with the light behind the camera rather than behind the subject, produces evidence. A camera under the eaves looking down at a wide compound produces context. You want both, in that priority order, and most installations get the ratio backwards.
Technically, the decisions that matter are resolution at distance, low-light behaviour and storage retention. A 2 MP camera gives usable facial detail to roughly four metres; 5 MP extends that meaningfully; beyond that you are usually better placing the camera closer than raising the megapixels. Colour night vision needs genuine ambient light or a white-light LED, and there is a real trade-off with neighbours and with the softer look of infrared. Storage is simple arithmetic: camera count, resolution, frame rate and days of retention determine hard-drive size, and we calculate it rather than fitting whatever came in the box.
The installation quality is what determines whether the system survives Surat's climate. Cable runs go in UV-stable conduit, not stapled along a wall to bleach and crack. Outdoor joints are made in weatherproof boxes with drip loops, because water travels along cable into connectors. Power supplies are centralised and protected rather than a scatter of adaptors in unventilated corners. The DVR or NVR goes somewhere ventilated and not immediately visible from the entrance — the first thing an intruder looks for is the recorder.
Finally, we set the system up so you will actually use it: mobile app configured and tested on your phone before we leave, motion zones tuned so a passing street dog does not generate two hundred notifications, recording schedule matched to your routine, and admin password changed from the factory default. That last point is not a footnote — internet-exposed recorders with default credentials are routinely scanned and accessed, and it is the most common security failure in the entire category.
