An EV charger is not another appliance. It draws near its maximum for six to eight hours continuously, which is a duty cycle nothing else in a home comes close to. It needs its own circuit, its own protection and cable sized for sustained load — not a 16 A socket in the parking.
Electric vehicle adoption in Surat has moved faster than the electrical infrastructure in most residential buildings, and the gap shows up in how people charge. The default arrangement — the portable cable that came with the car, plugged into whatever 16 A socket exists near the parking — works, in the sense that the car charges. It also draws around 2.5 kW continuously for eight or more hours through a socket, a plug top and a length of cable that were designed for intermittent use. We have seen the melted results of that arrangement more than once.
A proper installation starts with the incoming supply. A 7.4 kW single-phase charger draws about 32 A sustained, which is a substantial addition to a domestic connection. We measure your existing maximum demand, check the main incomer and the sanctioned load on your DGVCL connection, and tell you honestly whether the supply can take it or whether a load enhancement is needed first. Skipping this step is how people end up tripping their main every evening.
The circuit itself is dedicated, from the distribution board to the charge point, with no other load on it. Cable is sized for continuous current with the derating that applies to a conduit run in Surat's ambient temperature — usually 6 sq mm for 7.4 kW, sometimes 10 sq mm on a long run to a basement or a detached parking. Protection is a correctly rated MCB plus residual current protection appropriate to the charger: many EV chargers require Type-B RCD protection or have equivalent DC leakage detection built in, because they can produce smooth DC residual currents that blind a standard Type-AC device. This is a genuine safety point and it is routinely ignored.
Placement and weatherproofing follow. The charge point goes where the car's port will actually be, at a height that keeps the cable off the ground, with enough clearance to park comfortably. Outdoor and semi-covered installations use IP65-rated units with proper glanding and drip loops, because a Surat monsoon will find any gap in an enclosure. We also add a lockable isolator where the unit is in shared or accessible space.
Society and shared-parking installations bring their own complexity, and it is mostly administrative rather than technical. Metering has to be sorted so the right person pays — either a separate meter, a sub-meter, or an app-based charger with per-user billing. The committee needs a load statement and often a written safety assurance. Cable routing through common areas needs approval and proper containment.
