Office electrical design fails in predictable ways: not enough sockets in the wrong places, raw mains where UPS was needed, glare on every screen, and a server cupboard sharing a circuit with the pantry kettle. All of it is avoidable at the drawing stage.
The commonest complaint in a finished office is that there are not enough power points, and the second commonest is that they are in the wrong place. Both trace back to the same cause — the electrical layout was drawn before the furniture layout was settled, or worse, was copied from a previous project. Workstation power has to follow the desk plan, and the desk plan has to be reasonably final before conduit goes in the floor or the wall.
We plan office power around three separate distributions. Raw mains for lighting, air-conditioning, pantry and general services. UPS-backed power for workstations, servers and network equipment, on visually distinguished sockets so that nobody plugs a kettle into the UPS line — this happens constantly where the sockets look identical, and it is why UPS runtimes mysteriously halve. And a clean earth reference for sensitive equipment where the installation warrants it.
Workstation delivery matters as much as capacity. Floor boxes, raised-floor outlets, desk-mounted power modules and skirting trunking each suit different fit-outs, and the choice affects both flexibility and how the space looks. A cluster of six workstations typically wants two UPS sockets and one raw socket per person, plus data — and that is before anyone brings in a second monitor and a desk lamp. Under-provisioning gets solved by users with extension boards, which is how a well-designed office becomes a trip hazard with an overloaded circuit within six months.
Lighting in an office is a productivity and compliance question, not an aesthetic one. Around 300–500 lux at desk level, delivered by fixtures with low unified glare rating positioned so that no screen carries a reflection, at 4000 K neutral white. Meeting rooms need dimmable scenes for presentations. Reception can be warmer and more designed. Emergency and exit lighting is a legal requirement, needs to be on a maintained or non-maintained circuit as appropriate, and must be tested periodically — something a surprising number of Surat offices have never done.
Server and network rooms get particular attention: dedicated circuits with their own protection, adequate and separately powered cooling, UPS distribution sized with headroom, proper containment separating power from data cable to avoid induced noise, and an earth arrangement appropriate to the equipment. We also label everything comprehensively, because the person troubleshooting at eleven at night will not be the person who installed it.
