Serious domestic electrical faults very rarely appear without warning. A switchboard that catches fire has usually been running warm for months. A socket that gives someone a shock has usually been tingling faintly for weeks. The signals exist; they are simply not recognised for what they are.
This checklist covers what you can meaningfully check yourself, what requires instruments, and — importantly — which observations mean 'call now' rather than 'mention it next time'.
The urgent signs: stop and call
Some observations should change what you do in the next five minutes. Switch off the main supply at your distribution board if you can reach it safely, and call an electrician.
A burning smell, particularly the sharp fishy or acrid smell of hot plastic, means insulation is being heated by arcing or overload. It is one step short of a fire. Visible smoke or scorch marks spreading around a socket or switch is the same message, further along.
Sparking or a crackling sound from a socket, switch or the distribution board means a connection is arcing. A brief blue flash as a high-load plug makes contact can be normal; a yellow or orange spark, or a sustained crackle, is not.
A distribution board or switch plate that is hot to touch. Warm is worth investigating; hot is urgent.
Any shock, however slight, from an appliance body, a tap or a metal surface. This means leakage current is present with no adequate earth path, and the difference between a tingle and an electrocution can be as small as whether your hands were wet.
Water reaching live equipment, or a breaker that trips instantly every time you reset it.

What you can check yourself, safely
None of these require tools or any contact with live parts. Run through them twice a year — a good habit is once before monsoon and once after Diwali.
Feel your switch plates and socket faces. They should be at room temperature. Anything noticeably warm has a connection problem behind it.
Look at every socket face for discolouration, particularly a brown or yellow tinge around the pin holes. That is heat staining, and it means the contacts are running hot.
Test every socket's grip. If a plug falls out or wobbles, the contacts have lost tension and are making intermittent contact — which means arcing under load.
Press the RCCB test button on your distribution board. It should trip instantly. If it does not, or if you have no RCCB, that is your highest-priority item.
Check that every MCB in your board is labelled and that you know what each controls. If you cannot identify which breaker isolates your kitchen, you cannot make your home safe in an emergency.
Look at your extension boards. Extension feeding extension, or an adapter carrying three plugs, is a sign you need real sockets rather than more improvisation.
What needs an electrician and instruments
Four measurements tell you almost everything about an installation's condition, and none can be assessed by looking.
Earth resistance, measured with a calibrated earth tester, should be under 5 ohms for a domestic property. Above roughly 10 ohms, a fault may not draw enough current to trip protection — meaning a faulty appliance body can remain live. Pits drift as soil dries, so a value from installation tells you nothing about today.
Insulation resistance, measured with a megger, tests each circuit core-to-core and core-to-earth. It is the objective answer to whether your wiring has service life remaining, and it is what should determine a rewiring decision rather than the property's age.
RCCB trip time and trip current, measured with a loop tester rather than the built-in button. The button confirms the mechanism moves; only an instrument confirms it operates within specification.
Socket polarity and earth continuity, checked with a socket analyser at every point. A socket with an earth pin connected to nothing looks identical to one that is properly earthed, and we find them regularly.
A full audit covering all four, plus a thermal check of every board and a visual inspection of all switchboards, takes about two hours and costs ₹2,500. For most homes it finds two or three things nobody knew about.
Priorities when the budget is limited
If you cannot do everything, this is the order that gives the most safety per rupee, and it is the order we recommend regardless of property value.
First, a 30 mA RCCB if your board does not have one. At ₹2,200 to ₹4,200 it is the only device in a domestic installation that protects people rather than cable, and its absence is the most common serious gap in Indian homes.
Second, an earth resistance measurement at ₹1,200. This tells you whether your protection can actually operate on a fault. There is limited value in protective devices if the earth path they depend on has drifted to 25 ohms.
Third, address any warm switchboards or discoloured sockets. Board repair is ₹850 to ₹1,800 and it removes the most common ignition source in a home.
Fourth, an insulation survey at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 if the property is over fifteen years old. This is the measurement that should decide whether rewiring is needed, and it frequently shows it is not.
Rewiring comes fifth, and only if the survey says so. A household that spends ₹4,000 on an RCCB has done more for its safety than one that spends ₹40,000 on partial rewiring while leaving the board unprotected.

Habits worth building
A few small routines prevent most of what we get called about.
Press the RCCB test button every three months. Two seconds, and it is the only way to know the device has not seized.
Water a conventional earth pit every fifteen to twenty days through the dry season, roughly October to May. Ten to fifteen litres. This single habit is the difference between a pit that stays at 3 ohms and one that drifts to 25.
Do not run high-load appliances through extension leads. Geysers, heaters, irons, induction plates and air conditioners should be on fixed sockets, ideally on their own circuits.
Unplug rather than switching off at the socket for appliances you are leaving for a long period, and always for anything showing intermittent behaviour.
Keep the distribution board accessible and labelled. Not behind a wardrobe, not inside a locked cupboard whose key is missing. In an emergency, the ability to isolate quickly is what limits damage.
Get a proper audit every five years for a property under fifteen years old, and every two to three years for one over fifteen — plus immediately after any flooding or major renovation.
