Every Diwali, we get the same calls. Families decorate their homes with beautiful jhalar lights — strings of LEDs draped across balconies, windows, and entrances. Then, the moment they switch them on, the MCB trips. The solution they try? Reset it. It trips again. Then they try a bigger breaker. That is where the danger begins.
Jhalar lights are a special case in electrical troubleshooting. They are not heavy loads, yet they cause breakers to trip like a short circuit. This article explains exactly why that happens, how to distinguish it from a genuine fault, and how to fix it safely — without burning down your home.
What an MCB is actually protecting
This is the point that changes how everything else makes sense. An MCB does not protect your appliances, and it does not protect you. It protects the cable buried in your wall.
Every cable has a current-carrying capacity determined by its cross-sectional area, its insulation type and the conditions it runs in. A 1.5 sq mm copper cable in conduit can safely carry roughly 14 to 16 amps continuously. Push more through it and it heats. Push considerably more and the insulation degrades, cracks, and eventually the cable becomes an ignition source inside a wall where nobody can see it.
The MCB's rating is chosen to disconnect before that happens. A 16 A MCB on a 1.5 sq mm circuit is not an arbitrary number — it is the current at which that specific cable must stop carrying load. When you replace it with a 32 A device, the cable has not changed. You have simply removed the thing that was going to stop it overheating.
This is why a competent electrician will refuse to upsize a breaker without first establishing why it is tripping. It is not caution or upselling. A tripping MCB is a component doing its job, and disabling it converts a manageable fault into a fire risk.
Cause one: overload — when you simply have too many lights
Overload is the simplest cause and the most common during festive seasons. The circuit is being asked to carry more current than its rating, usually because people add jhalar lights, decorative lamps, and other lighting without considering the circuit's capacity.
The signature is characteristic. The trip happens after a delay rather than instantly — often several minutes after you switch on the lights. It correlates with usage: it happens when the decorative lights run alongside the room lights, fans, and other appliances. And it does not happen when the lights are off.
That delay is deliberate. An MCB has two trip mechanisms. A thermal element, which is a bimetallic strip that bends as it heats, handles sustained overloads and takes time. A magnetic element handles short circuits and operates in milliseconds. An overload trips the thermal element, which is why it takes minutes.
Today's LED jhalar lights are low-wattage. A typical 20-meter string draws about 5-7 watts per meter, so 100-140 watts total. That is less than one old incandescent bulb. But if you string together 10 such sets, you are now at 1,400 watts — over 6 amps on a circuit that may already have other loads. Add a few more sets, and you cross the breaker's limit. But in reality, this is rarely the main issue with jhalar lights.

Cause two: the hidden culprit — inrush current from jhalar LED drivers
This is the real reason your jhalar lights trip the MCB, and it is the one that confuses most people. It is not a short circuit, but it looks exactly like one to the MCB.
Modern LED jhalar lights run on low voltage DC. To convert the 230V AC mains to the required DC voltage, they use a power supply — a driver. Inside every driver are capacitors. When you switch on the lights, these capacitors charge instantly, drawing a massive 'inrush current' for a few milliseconds. Think of it like a sudden gulp of electricity.
This inrush can be 50 to 100 times the normal running current. If you have multiple jhalar strings on one circuit — say, ten sets each with their own driver — the combined inrush at the moment of switching on can exceed the magnetic trip threshold of the MCB. The MCB sees this as a short circuit and trips instantly.
The signature is unmistakable: the breaker trips the moment you flip the switch. Not after a few minutes, but right at that instant. There is no burnt smell, no visible damage. And the lights work fine if you reset the breaker and try again later. Some people even notice that if they turn the lights on, wait for the trip, reset, and turn them on again, it holds. That is because the capacitors are partially charged from the first attempt, reducing the second inrush.

Cause three: short circuit — damaged jhalar wiring
A genuine short circuit is live meeting neutral, or live meeting earth, with almost no resistance in between. This can happen with jhalar lights when the thin PVC insulation gets pinched, cracked, or chewed by rodents, or when water enters a connection point during monsoon or dew.
The signature is unmistakable. The trip is instant — the moment you close the breaker, or the moment you switch on the jhalar string, it goes. There is often an audible crack. There may be a visible flash, a scorch mark on the plug or socket, or a smell of burnt plastic. And the breaker will not hold no matter how many times you reset it — even on the third or fourth attempt.
The critical thing here is to stop resetting. Every reset attempt sends a large fault current through cable that may already be damaged, and each pass adds heat. If a breaker trips instantly on reset, isolate that circuit and leave it isolated.
To narrow it down: unplug all the jhalar strings and try again. If it holds, plug each string back one at a time. The one that causes the instant trip has a short circuit inside it. Discard that string immediately.

Cause four: earth leakage from outdoor jhalar installations
Earth leakage is the cause people most often misidentify, partly because it usually trips a different device — the RCCB. If your board has an RCCB and it is the RCCB rather than the individual MCB that trips when you plug in jhalar lights, you are looking at leakage.
An RCCB compares current flowing out on the live conductor against current returning on the neutral. In a healthy circuit these are identical. If 30 milliamps go missing, that current is escaping somewhere it should not be — through damp plaster, through wet jhalar wiring, or through a person. The RCCB disconnects in under 40 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent electrocution.
Jhalar lights are often installed outdoors — on balconies, terraces, railings, and windows. In Surat's monsoon season, moisture is everywhere. The thin insulation on jhalar wires is not designed for outdoor exposure. Water seeps in, the insulation degrades, and current leaks to earth through the wet surface. The RCCB trips, and it keeps tripping until things dry out.
The signature is seasonal: trips during rain or high humidity, and behaves during dry weather. It often trips at night when dew forms and behaves during the day. This is the RCCB doing exactly what it was designed to do — protecting you from electrocution.

How to narrow it down yourself in ten minutes
Before calling anyone, this sequence will usually tell you which of the four you have, and occasionally it will solve the problem outright.
First, note exactly what trips — an individual MCB or the RCCB. That single observation separates earth leakage from the other causes.
Second, note the timing. Instant on switch-on usually means inrush (for LED drivers) or short circuit. Delayed means overload. Intermittent and weather-correlated means leakage.
Third, unplug all jhalar strings and reset. If it holds, the problem is in the lights themselves. Plug them back one set at a time, waiting 5 seconds between each. If tripping happens only when a specific set is plugged in, that set has a short circuit or defective driver. Discard it.
Fourth, if it trips when all strings are plugged in but none individually, the combined inrush is too high. The solution is to use a C-curve MCB or split the strings across multiple circuits.
Fifth, if the RCCB trips but no MCB trips, the issue is earth leakage. Inspect outdoor strings for damaged insulation, water ingress, or exposed connectors. Replace any damaged sets.

What the correct fix looks like
For simple overload from too many lights, the answer is to divide the load. That means splitting the jhalar strings across multiple existing circuits, or adding a dedicated 1.5 sq mm or 2.5 sq mm circuit for decorative lighting. In Surat this generally costs between ₹1,500 and ₹3,500 depending on the run.
For LED driver inrush, the fix is often simple and inexpensive: replace the B-curve MCB with a C-curve MCB of the same amperage. C-curve devices allow a higher instantaneous current before tripping — typically 5 to 10 times the rated current, compared to 3 to 5 times for B-curve. This perfectly accommodates the start-up surge of LED drivers while still providing full protection against genuine faults. You do not upsize the breaker; you change its characteristic. A C-curve 16A MCB costs about ₹300-₹500 and takes 10 minutes to install.
For a short circuit in damaged jhalar wiring, the faulty string must be discarded. Do not repair it. The thin wires are difficult to splice safely, and a DIY repair often introduces a fire risk. A new jhalar set costs ₹300-₹1,000 — far less than a house fire.
For earth leakage, the source has to be isolated. Check outdoor strings for water ingress, cracked insulation, or exposed connectors. Replace any set that shows signs of wear. For permanent outdoor installations, consider using IP65-rated weatherproof connectors and LED strips rather than standard jhalar strings. The tracing takes about an hour and costs ₹800 to ₹2,000.
What must not happen is bypassing the RCCB, which is something we still find when we arrive at a property where somebody got tired of resetting it. Bypassing the RCCB removes the only device in your board that protects a person from electrocution. Never do it.
In every case, the diagnosis comes before the repair. Ten minutes of observation will tell you what is actually happening, and that is what separates a repair that lasts from one you will be calling about again in three months.
